Weeping Falls Loop, Colo Vale NSW

Weeping Falls Loop is a short bushwalk in Mount Alexandra Reserve, near Colo Vale in the Southern Highlands. This 1 km loop starts near the locked gate at Wonson’s Fire Trail and offers a quick local walk through quiet bushland to a small waterfall tucked into the reserve.

Although the loop is short, it feels more adventurous than the distance suggests. The main route follows a clear track through Mount Alexandra Reserve, with typical Southern Highlands bushland, rocky sections and shaded pockets of vegetation. It is a good option for walkers looking for a quick nature escape close to Colo Vale, Mittagong and the northern villages of the Southern Highlands.

The highlight of the walk is Weeping Falls, a small waterfall that flows best after rain. From the main loop, you can view the falls from above, but reaching the bottom requires a rougher, less obvious side track. Looking downstream, search for a track on the left of the falls. If you cannot find it, double back along the clearer trail until you notice a worn-in single track on the right.

The descent to the base is not part of the main mapped loop and should be treated as an optional off-track detour. The rocks can be slippery, the bush is thick and the route may be harder to follow after rain or during periods of overgrowth. Take your time, wear sturdy shoes and avoid climbing on wet rocks around the waterfall.

Because the walk is short, Weeping Falls Loop is a good choice if you want a quick Southern Highlands bushwalk without committing to a longer outing. However, it is still best suited to walkers who are comfortable on uneven natural tracks, especially if adding the detour to the bottom of the falls.

There are no major facilities at the start of the walk, so bring water, check conditions before heading out and leave no trace. As this is a bushland reserve, stay on established tracks where possible, avoid disturbing vegetation and take care around creek lines, slippery rocks and steep edges.

For locals and visitors looking for a lesser-known walk near Colo Vale, Weeping Falls Loop is a rewarding short option. With easy access from Wonson’s Fire Trail, quiet bushland and a hidden waterfall, it is a simple but enjoyable walk in Mount Alexandra Reserve.
