Mount Ossa Summit, Overland Track Side trip
Mount Ossa is one of the great side trips on the Overland Track, taking walkers to the highest point in Tasmania. This approximately 5.6 km out and back detour leaves the main Overland Track near Pelion Gap and climbs through exposed alpine country to the rocky summit of Mount Ossa.
Although the distance is relatively short, this is a serious alpine walk. The track is steep, rough and exposed, with rocky sections, boulder fields and changeable mountain weather. Allow around 4 to 5 hours to complete the return detour from the track junction, and only attempt the summit if you have enough daylight, good visibility and suitable conditions.
From Pelion Gap, the route climbs steadily away from the Overland Track, with views opening back towards Mount Pelion East, Mount Doris and the surrounding valleys. As you gain height, the landscape becomes increasingly alpine, with low vegetation, exposed rock and broad views across Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.
The final approach to the summit involves rougher terrain and some scrambling through dolerite boulders. On a clear day, the reward is one of the best views on the Overland Track, stretching across Tasmania’s central highlands, surrounding peaks, glacial valleys and remote wilderness.
Mount Ossa should not be treated as a casual add-on. Weather can change quickly, and the summit area is very exposed to wind, rain, cloud and snow. Do not attempt the climb in poor weather, heavy rain, snow or low visibility. Boulder fields can be dangerous when wet, icy or snow-covered, and navigation can become difficult if cloud moves in.
This detour is best suited to fit and experienced walkers already undertaking the Overland Track. Carry warm layers, wet weather gear, food, water, a map and a headtorch, even if conditions look good when you leave the main track. If you choose to leave your large pack near the junction, keep essentials with you and make sure your pack is secure without blocking the track.
For many Overland Track walkers, Mount Ossa is a major highlight of the journey. With the right conditions, preparation and timing, this short but challenging summit detour offers the chance to stand on Tasmania’s highest mountain and take in some of the most spectacular alpine views in the state.
