Dove Lake Circuit, Cradle Mountain

Dove Lake Circuit is one of the most popular walks in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. This 6 km loop takes around 2 to 3 hours and follows the edge of Dove Lake beneath the dramatic peaks of Cradle Mountain.

The walk is famous for its alpine scenery, clear lake views, the historic Dove Lake boatshed and sections of lush Tasmanian rainforest. It is one of Tasmania’s Great Short Walks, and for many visitors, it is the classic Cradle Mountain walking experience.

Starting the Dove Lake Circuit

The walk starts from the Dove Lake viewing shelter. Most visitors reach the trailhead by shuttle bus from the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre.

The shuttle stops at the Interpretation Centre and Ranger Station, Snake Hill, Ronny Creek and Dove Lake. The trip from the visitor centre to Dove Lake takes about 20 minutes. You need a valid parks pass, and you should organise your shuttle ticket at the visitor centre before boarding.

Private vehicle access to Dove Lake is limited during the day. Therefore, it is best to plan around the shuttle service and check current times before you arrive.

Walking around Dove Lake

The track follows a full circuit around Dove Lake. It is best walked clockwise, which gives you a gradual introduction to the lake, forest and mountain views.

At first, the track offers open views across the water towards Cradle Mountain. On still days, the lake often reflects the peaks, creating one of the most photographed scenes in Tasmania.

As you continue, the track passes through buttongrass, alpine vegetation and sections of forest. Later, the route enters a beautiful rainforest section with myrtle, sassafras, fagus and King Billy pine.

Dove Lake boatshed

One of the main highlights is the Dove Lake boatshed. This small timber building sits on the edge of the lake with Cradle Mountain rising behind it.

It is a popular photo stop, so it can get busy during the middle of the day. However, the view is worth taking your time for, especially in calm weather or soft morning light.

Track conditions and accessibility

Dove Lake Circuit is a Grade 3 walk. The track is well formed and includes boardwalk sections, steps, gravel, uneven ground and short climbs.

Although the walk suits many families, it is not a pram-friendly or wheelchair-accessible full loop due to the stairs and uneven sections. Some facilities and shuttle buses in the Cradle Mountain area are accessible, but the full circuit is better suited to walkers who are comfortable on formed bush tracks.

Weather can change quickly at Cradle Mountain. Bring warm clothing, rain protection, water and sturdy shoes, even if the day starts clear.

Facilities and safety

Facilities are available at the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre and at Dove Lake. There are also accessible toilets at the Dove Lake Visitor Shelter.

Before starting the walk, check current park alerts, shuttle times and weather conditions. Snow, ice, rain and strong wind can affect tracks at any time of year.

A valid Tasmanian parks pass is required for entry to Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Plan ahead, stay on the track and allow extra time for photos, shuttle transfers and changing alpine conditions.
