Wineglass Bay Lookout Walk, Freycinet National Park

Wineglass Bay Lookout Walk is one of Tasmania’s most famous short walks, leading to a spectacular view over the white sand and clear blue water of Wineglass Bay. Located in Freycinet National Park on Tasmania’s east coast, this 2.6 km return walk takes around 1 to 1.5 hours and is one of the best ways to experience the dramatic coastal scenery of the Freycinet Peninsula.

The walk begins from the Wineglass Bay Walking Tracks Car Park, not far from Coles Bay and the Freycinet Visitor Centre. From the trailhead, the track climbs steadily through coastal woodland, passing granite boulders, hardy native shrubs and views towards the Hazards. The track is well constructed, with resting seats along the way, but the climb is steep enough to feel like a proper workout.

At the saddle, a short section leads to the lookout platforms, where the view opens across Wineglass Bay. From here, you can see the sweeping curve of pale sand, the sheltered turquoise water and the forested hills surrounding one of Tasmania’s most recognisable beaches. On a clear day, the lookout is a fantastic place for photos, and you may even spot dolphins or whales in the bay.

Although this is a short walk, it is graded as a Grade 3 track and includes steep uphill sections, steps and uneven surfaces. Sturdy shoes are recommended, particularly after rain, as Freycinet tracks can include loose gravel and steep granite surfaces. The lookout also has hazardous cliff edges, so children should be closely supervised and walkers should stay within barriers at all times.

This walk is ideal for visitors who want the classic Wineglass Bay view without continuing down to the beach. Those wanting a longer adventure can continue past the lookout to Wineglass Bay Beach or complete the longer Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach Circuit, but the lookout alone is a rewarding walk in its own right.

Facilities are available at the Wineglass Bay Walking Tracks Car Park, including toilets, and drinking water is available from taps at the car park and from the filtered water station at the Freycinet Visitor Centre. A valid parks pass is required for entry to Freycinet National Park.

For visitors exploring Coles Bay, Freycinet National Park or Tasmania’s east coast, Wineglass Bay Lookout Walk is a must-do. With a short but steady climb and one of the most iconic coastal views in Australia, it is a classic Tasmanian walk that is well worth the effort.
