Wedding Cake Rock Walk, Royal National Park

Wedding Cake Rock is one of the most recognisable coastal landmarks in Royal National Park, located along the famous Coast Track south of Bundeena. Known for its striking white sandstone and dramatic cliffside position above the ocean, this popular lookout is a rewarding short walk with sweeping views of the Royal National Park coastline.

The walk to Wedding Cake Rock starts from the end of Beachcomber Avenue in Bundeena. Parking in the surrounding streets can be limited, especially on weekends and during holidays, so it is worth arriving early or taking public transport to Cronulla, then catching the ferry across to Bundeena. From the ferry wharf, it is a short walk through town to the start of the Coast Track.

From Beachcomber Avenue, follow the Coast Track south as it climbs through coastal heath and open sandstone country. The track is well used and signposted, but it can still be rough, rocky and muddy in places, particularly after rain. Sturdy shoes are recommended, along with drinking water, sun protection and a camera.

Along the way, the walk offers plenty of coastal views, with sandstone cliffs, ocean lookouts and sections of low heathland that are especially colourful during spring wildflower season. One of the popular stops before Wedding Cake Rock is The Balconies, a layered sandstone formation with views over the blue water below. Take care near all cliff edges and stay on the marked track.

Wedding Cake Rock itself is fenced off due to serious safety risks. The rock is fragile, unstable and at risk of collapse, so visitors must not climb over the fence, stand on the rock or sit near the cliff edge. The best way to enjoy Wedding Cake Rock is from behind the safety barrier, where you can still see the distinctive white sandstone formation and take photos safely.

Allow around 2 hours return for the Wedding Cake Rock walk from Bundeena, with extra time for photos and rest stops. The walk can be hot and exposed in summer, and phone reception may be unreliable, so plan ahead and check current Royal National Park alerts before visiting.

If you continue south past Wedding Cake Rock, the Coast Track leads towards Marley Beach, Wattamolla, Garie, Era Beach and eventually Otford. These are much longer walks and require proper planning. For those wanting a bigger adventure, read our full Bundeena to Otford Coast Track guide before setting off.

For visitors looking for a short coastal walk near Sydney, Wedding Cake Rock is one of the best options in Royal National Park. With easy access from Bundeena, dramatic ocean views and one of the park’s most famous rock formations, it is a memorable walk, as long as it is enjoyed safely from behind the fence.
