Tomaree Head Summit Walk, Port Stephens NSW

Tomaree Head Summit Walk is one of the best short coastal hikes in New South Wales, offering spectacular views over Port Stephens, Shoal Bay and the surrounding coastline. Located in Tomaree National Park near Shoal Bay, this 2.2 km return walk climbs to the summit of Tomaree Head, 161 metres above the entrance to Port Stephens.

Although the walk is short, it is a steep and challenging climb. The track includes paved sections, stairs, metal walkways and lookout platforms, with a steady ascent that gets the heart rate up quickly. NSW National Parks grades the walk as Grade 5, so allow around 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours for the return trip, especially if you plan to stop for photos or enjoy the views from the summit.

The reward for the climb is one of the most impressive coastal panoramas in the region. From the northern viewing platform, you can look across Yacaaba Head, Cabbage Tree Island, Boondelbah Island and Broughton Island. From the southern viewing platform, there are sweeping views over Zenith Beach, Wreck Beach, Box Beach, Fingal Island and Point Stephens Lighthouse.

Tomaree Head is also a great whale watching spot during the migration season from May to November, so binoculars are worth packing if you are visiting at the right time of year. Keep an eye out for seabirds, dolphins and changing light across the bays and beaches below.

Take care on the way up and down, particularly after rain, as sections of the track can become slippery when wet. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, along with water, sun protection and a reasonable level of fitness. The exposed sections near the top can also be hot in summer, so an early morning or late afternoon walk is often more comfortable.

On the return, you can also add the nearby Fort Tomaree walk to explore historic World War II gun emplacements and learn more about the headland’s military history.

For visitors exploring Port Stephens, Nelson Bay or Shoal Bay, Tomaree Head Summit Walk is a must-do. It is short, steep and memorable, with some of the best coastal views in Tomaree National Park.
