Details
Three Falls Circuit is one of the best short walks in Mount Field National Park, combining three waterfalls, lush rainforest and towering eucalypt forest into one rewarding loop. This 6 km circuit takes around 2 to 2.5 hours to complete and is a great way to experience more of the park beyond the famous Russell Falls.
The walk begins near the Mount Field Visitor Centre and is commonly completed anti-clockwise. From the visitor centre, the track first follows the popular Russell Falls Nature Walk through cool rainforest to the base of Russell Falls, one of Tasmania’s most recognisable waterfalls. From here, the circuit climbs to Horseshoe Falls, a smaller but beautiful waterfall set among mossy rock, ferns and dense forest.
The track then continues through the Tall Trees area, where you can see impressive swamp gums rising high above the forest floor. This section gives the walk a different feel, moving from rainforest into tall eucalypt forest and showcasing the variety of environments found in the lower parts of Mount Field National Park.
The final waterfall on the circuit is Lady Barron Falls, a scenic cascade along Lady Barron Creek. This section is especially beautiful after rain, when the creek is flowing strongly and the forest feels cool, damp and full of life. From Lady Barron Falls, the track loops back towards the visitor centre, finishing with a long set of wooden steps.
Although Three Falls Circuit is a well-built and well-marked track, it is graded as a moderate walk and includes plenty of stairs, bridges and some steady climbs. The track can be wet or slippery in places, particularly after rain, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
With Russell Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Lady Barron Falls and the Tall Trees walk all linked together in one circuit, Three Falls Circuit is a fantastic choice for walkers wanting a scenic half-day walk in Mount Field National Park. It is family-friendly for those comfortable with stairs and uneven surfaces, and offers one of the most rewarding short walking experiences in Tasmania.
