Sailors Falls Mineral Springs Loop Walk, Daylesford
Sailors Falls is a short and scenic waterfall walk near Daylesford, Victoria. Located in Hepburn Regional Park, this peaceful stop combines a dramatic waterfall, fern-lined gullies, mineral springs and picnic facilities, making it a great short walk for visitors exploring Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges.
The Sailors Falls Mineral Springs Loop Walk starts from Sailors Falls Picnic Area on Ballan-Daylesford Road. The loop is around 1.5 km and takes about 40 minutes, making it an easy option if you are looking for a short nature walk close to Daylesford.
From the picnic area, the track leads to viewing platforms overlooking Sailors Falls, where water drops around 20 metres into a rocky, fern-filled gully below. The waterfall is usually at its best in winter and spring, or after decent rain, when Sailors Creek is flowing well through the gorge.
The walk then continues towards the mineral springs, following signed tracks through the surrounding bushland before looping back to the picnic area. This part of Hepburn Regional Park is known for its mineral water, and Sailors Falls is one of several mineral spring areas around Daylesford and Hepburn Springs.
Although the walk is short, there are a significant number of steps to reach some of the viewing areas, so the return climb may feel harder than the distance suggests. The track can also be slippery after rain, particularly around stairs, rock surfaces and shaded sections of the gully. Sturdy shoes are recommended.
Facilities at Sailors Falls include parking, undercover picnic tables, interpretive displays and a tapped mineral spring. The picnic area and mineral spring facilities can be accessed without steps, while the lower viewing areas require using stairs.
Sailors Falls is also a place with goldfields history. The falls are thought to be named after sailors who left their ships during the 1850s gold rush to seek their fortune in the area. Remnants of old water races can still be seen nearby, linking the landscape to the region’s mining past.
For visitors staying in Daylesford, Hepburn Springs or the wider Macedon Ranges, Sailors Falls is a worthwhile short walk. With easy road access, a beautiful waterfall, mineral spring features and a peaceful picnic area, it is one of the best quick nature stops near Daylesford.
