Nigretta Falls Walk, Southern Grampians Victoria
Nigretta Falls is a scenic waterfall stop in the Southern Grampians region of western Victoria, located near Bochara and around 20 km from Hamilton. Fed by the Wannon River, the falls spill over dark volcanic rock into a rocky gorge, creating one of the most attractive short nature stops in the Greater Hamilton area.
The walk begins from the Nigretta Falls picnic area, where an observation deck provides an easy view of the waterfall from close to the parking area. From here, visitors can take the stairs down towards the base of the falls for a closer look at the water dropping over the rock ledges and flowing through the valley below.
Although the walk is short, the stairs to the lower viewing area can make the return climb feel more challenging than expected. Take care on the steps and rock surfaces, particularly after rain, as the area can become slippery. Sturdy shoes are recommended if you plan to walk down to the base.
Nigretta Falls is often at its best during winter, spring or after good rainfall, when the Wannon River is flowing strongly. In drier periods, the falls may be gentler, but the rocky gorge, river views and surrounding bushland still make it a worthwhile stop.
Facilities at Nigretta Falls include parking, picnic areas, BBQ facilities, lookouts and public toilets, making it a convenient place to pause on a drive through the Southern Grampians. It can also be easily paired with nearby Wannon Falls for a relaxed waterfall outing close to Hamilton.
Visitors should avoid entering the water unless current local conditions clearly allow it. Southern Grampians Shire Council has previously issued water quality warnings for both Wannon and Nigretta Falls, so check current advice before swimming or having contact with the water.
For travellers exploring Hamilton, the Grampians region or western Victoria, Nigretta Falls is an easy and rewarding short walk. With quick access, picnic facilities, waterfall views and a rocky river setting, it is a great stop for families, photographers and anyone looking for a peaceful nature break.
