Mount Oberon Summit Walk, Wilsons Promontory National Park
Mount Oberon Summit Walk is one of the most rewarding short hikes in Wilsons Promontory National Park, offering some of the best coastal views in Victoria. This 6.8 km return walk takes around 2 hours and climbs steadily from Telegraph Saddle Carpark to the summit of Mount Oberon.
The walk follows a wide management vehicle track through tall eucalypt forest, gradually winding uphill towards the summit. While the track is well formed, the climb is steady and exposed in places, so it can feel harder than the distance suggests. The final section includes a steep climb up timber and granite steps before reaching the rocky summit area.
From the top of Mount Oberon, walkers are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across Tidal River, Norman Beach, the coastline and offshore islands of Wilsons Promontory. On a clear day, the mix of granite peaks, blue water, white sand and forested valleys makes this one of the most memorable lookouts in the park.
Although the track is straightforward to follow, Mount Oberon Walk is graded as a Grade 4 walk and is best suited to walkers with a reasonable level of fitness. There is limited shade along parts of the walk, and the summit can be windy or cool even in warmer months, so bring water, sun protection and a warm layer.
The walk begins at Telegraph Saddle Carpark, which is also the starting point for several longer walks in Wilsons Promontory National Park. During peak periods, vehicle access to Telegraph Saddle may be closed and a free shuttle bus usually operates from Tidal River and the Overnight Hikers car park. There are toilets at Telegraph Saddle, but no drinking water, so fill up before you leave.
For visitors staying at Tidal River or exploring Wilsons Promontory for the day, Mount Oberon Summit Walk is a must-do. It is a short but steady climb with a huge payoff, delivering classic Wilsons Prom views over beaches, islands, mountains and coastline.
