MacKenzie Falls Walk, Grampians National Park
MacKenzie Falls is one of the most popular and impressive waterfalls in Grampians National Park, known for its powerful year-round flow and dramatic rocky setting. Located in the northern Grampians, this short but rewarding walk takes visitors to the base of one of Victoria’s best-known waterfalls, where water crashes into a deep pool below and mist fills the gorge.
The main walk begins from the MacKenzie Falls car park and follows a well-formed track down to the base of the falls. On the way, you will pass a lookout with sweeping views over the waterfall and surrounding gorge. From there, the track continues down a series of around 260 steps to the bottom of the falls, where the full scale and power of MacKenzie Falls can really be appreciated.
While the walk down is straightforward, the return climb back to the car park can be challenging, especially on a warm day. The steep staircase makes this a short walk that can still feel like a workout, so take your time and carry plenty of water. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, as steps and rocks can be slippery, particularly after rain or near the base of the falls.
MacKenzie Falls is the most visited waterfall in the Grampians, so it can get busy, especially on weekends, public holidays and during school holidays. If you are hoping for a quieter experience, it is best to arrive early in the day. The falls are beautiful in every season, but they are especially refreshing in summer when the cool mist provides welcome relief from the heat.
If you do not want to take the stairs, there is also a wheelchair-accessible path to the upper lookout, which provides a great view of the falls without the descent to the base. Nearby, you can also visit Broken Falls lookout for another scenic perspective, or extend your outing by continuing along the MacKenzie River towards Fish Falls.
For visitors exploring Grampians National Park, MacKenzie Falls is a must-see. With easy road access, dramatic scenery and one of the most reliable waterfalls in Victoria, it is one of the standout short walks in the Grampians.
