Josephine Falls Walking Track, Wooroonooran National Park

Josephine Falls Walking Track is a short rainforest walk in Wooroonooran National Park, around 75 km south of Cairns in Tropical North Queensland. This 1.2 km return walk takes about 30 minutes and leads through lush World Heritage-listed rainforest to viewing decks overlooking Josephine Creek and the beautiful cascades of Josephine Falls.

The walk begins from the Josephine Falls car park and follows a well-formed track through dense tropical rainforest. Along the way, the forest is cool, shaded and full of life, with vines, palms, ferns and tall rainforest trees creating a classic Wet Tropics walking experience.

Josephine Falls is fed by rainfall from Bartle Frere, Queensland’s highest mountain, which rises above the surrounding landscape. As Josephine Creek descends from the mountain, it flows over smooth granite boulders, creating a series of cascades, pools and rock chutes that make this one of the most scenic short walks near Cairns.

The viewing platforms provide great views of the falls and creek, with plenty of opportunities for photography. The upper viewing platform is accessible with assistance, while stairs continue down towards the lower pool area. Facilities near the car park include toilets, picnic tables and a picnic shelter.

Although the walk itself is short and relatively easy, Josephine Falls can be extremely dangerous. Flash flooding can occur at any time of year, even when the weather at the falls appears sunny and dry. Rain falling higher in the Bartle Frere catchment can cause water levels to rise quickly and without warning. Always follow signs, stay out of restricted areas and never enter the top section of the falls.

Swimming may be possible in permitted lower pool areas when conditions are safe, but visitors should take great care around slippery rocks, fast-flowing water and changing water levels. Do not swim after heavy rain or when the water is moving strongly, and supervise children closely at all times.

For visitors exploring Cairns, Babinda, Mission Beach or the wider Wet Tropics region, Josephine Falls is a rewarding short stop. With easy access, rainforest scenery, clear water and views of one of North Queensland’s most beautiful cascades, it is one of the best short waterfall walks in Wooroonooran National Park.
