Carlotta’s Arch Track, Jenolan Caves
Carlotta’s Arch Track is a short but rewarding walk in Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve, near the famous Jenolan Caves. The track climbs to a dramatic limestone arch that frames views over the Jenolan valley, Blue Lake and the surrounding cliffs.
This 1 km one-way walk takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes. Although the distance is short, the track is graded as Grade 3 and includes a steady climb, steps and uneven sections.
Current access note
Carlotta Arch walking track is currently closed until late 2026 while major road and landslip repairs take place. Before planning a visit, check the latest NSW National Parks alerts for Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve.
Access arrangements around Jenolan Caves have changed due to ongoing repairs. As a result, visitors should not rely on older route descriptions or access notes.
Starting the walk
When open, the walk starts near the Jenolan Caves visitor precinct. From here, the track climbs away from the valley floor and quickly gains height.
The climb is short, but it can feel steeper than expected. However, the views improve as you rise above the caves area. Along the way, you’ll pass limestone cliffs, dry forest and sections of track that show off the rugged karst landscape.
Carlotta’s Arch
The highlight of the walk is Carlotta’s Arch, a large limestone arch high above the valley. From the lookout area, the arch creates a natural window across the surrounding cliffs and bushland.
It is also a great place to appreciate the geology of Jenolan Caves. The limestone here has been shaped over a huge period of time by water, weathering and cave-forming processes. As a result, the landscape feels very different from many other walks in the Blue Mountains region.
Track conditions and safety
Although Carlotta’s Arch Track is short, it still needs care. The path includes stairs, a steady climb and uneven ground. In addition, shaded sections can become slippery after rain.
Wear sturdy shoes, carry drinking water and take your time on the climb. Also, stay on the formed track and behind any barriers, as the surrounding cliffs and cave edges can be dangerous.
Nearby walks and caves
Carlotta’s Arch Track is a good add-on to a Jenolan Caves visit when the area is open. It gives walkers a chance to step outside the cave precinct and see the valley from above.
Nearby walks include the Jenolan River walking track and other short routes around the reserve. However, access can change due to roadworks, weather and track closures, so always check current conditions before visiting.
