Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk, Palm Beach NSW

Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk is one of Sydney’s most iconic short coastal walks, climbing to the top of Barrenjoey Head at Palm Beach in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. The walk combines coastal scenery, historic sandstone buildings and sweeping views over Broken Bay, Pittwater, the Central Coast and Sydney’s northern beaches.

The most popular route to the lighthouse is Barrenjoey Track, a 1 km walk each way from Governor Phillip Park. The track climbs steadily towards the headland and takes around 30 minutes each way, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos. Although short, the walk requires moderate fitness, especially on warmer days.

There is also the option to take Smugglers Track, a steeper and shorter route that provides a more challenging climb to the top. This track is named after the customs officers who used the route in the 1850s to monitor smugglers entering Broken Bay. Many walkers choose to go up one track and return via the other, creating a more varied walk.

At the summit, Barrenjoey Lighthouse stands 91 metres above sea level and offers one of the best viewpoints in Sydney. The lighthouse was built in 1881 from sandstone quarried on site, and its unpainted stone tower, oil room and keepers’ cottages remain a striking feature of the headland. While you can walk around the outside of the lighthouse at any time during park opening hours, access inside the lighthouse is only available on guided tours.

The views from Barrenjoey Head are spectacular in almost every direction. Look north across Broken Bay towards the Central Coast, west over the sheltered waters of Pittwater, and south along Palm Beach and the northern beaches coastline. During the whale migration season, the headland is also a great place to bring binoculars and scan the ocean.

Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk is well suited to visitors exploring Palm Beach, photography lovers and anyone wanting a short walk with a big coastal reward. Bring drinking water, sun protection, sturdy shoes and clothes suitable for changing weather. NSW National Parks recommends avoiding the lighthouse walk during strong winds, heavy rain or extreme heat.

Parking is available at Governor Phillip Park, although fees may apply and spaces can fill quickly on weekends and holidays. Toilets and drinking water are located near the parking area, but there are no facilities at the lighthouse itself.

For a classic Sydney coastal walk with history, ocean views and a memorable summit, Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk is hard to beat. It is short, scenic and steep enough to feel rewarding, making it one of the best walks around Palm Beach and Sydney’s northern beaches.
