Balaka Falls Circuit, Hunts Creek Reserve
Balaka Falls Circuit is a short bushwalk through Hunts Creek Reserve in Carlingford, just north of Parramatta. Hidden between the suburbs of Carlingford and North Rocks, this walk offers a surprisingly peaceful escape into native bushland, with the small but beautiful Balaka Falls as the main highlight.
The 1.8 km loop takes around 1 hour to complete and is a great option for families, local walkers and anyone looking for a quick nature walk in Sydney’s north-west. The track follows sections of Hunts Creek through a mix of bushland, sandstone, creekside vegetation and suburban reserve, giving the walk a much more natural feel than you might expect from its location.
Balaka Falls is the standout feature of the walk. This small tiered waterfall flows over dark sandstone ledges into a shallow pool below, creating a peaceful spot for photos or a quiet break. The falls are usually at their best after rain, when the creek is flowing well and the surrounding bushland feels fresh and green.
While the walk is short, it is still graded as a Grade 3 track. Expect natural earth paths, gravel sections, sandstone steps, uneven ground and creek crossings. Some sections can become muddy or slippery after wet weather, and one of the creek crossings may be difficult or impassable when water levels are high. Sturdy shoes are recommended, especially if you plan to walk the full loop.
There are several ways to access Balaka Falls and Hunts Creek Reserve, including local street entries around Carlingford. One of the quickest ways to reach the falls is from Ferndale Avenue, where a short path leads towards the top of the waterfall. Longer loop options can be started from other nearby streets, including Parkland Road and Sun Valley Place.
Balaka Falls Circuit is a great little walk for those wanting a local waterfall, a family-friendly bushland escape or a short Sydney walk that does not require a long drive. With easy suburban access, creekside scenery and a photogenic waterfall tucked into the reserve, it is one of the best hidden nature spots around Carlingford and North Rocks.
