Promised lands is a hidden gem found in the never never region within Belligen on the NSW North coast. This is a very short and easy walk but one that has much to offer.
In summer, Promised Lands is a popular swimming spot that offers crystal clear waters for swimming. Rope swings are scattered throughout the trees for the thrill seekers wanting a rush of adrenaline. They can be found along the river in many of the swimming holes.
In the winter months, this is a place of recreational white water rafting where tour groups and equipped adventurers take to the waters and travel along the never never river.

The colour of the water as you see it in our photos is the true colour of the never never river. The minerals in the rocks the water pass over give it the distinct blue tint.

Finding Promised Lands

You can find Promised Lands on Promised lands road, Belligen. There are a few starting points for the walk but generally, you start by parking in the carpark after the first bridge. This is an unsealed road but is fine for standard 2wds. The walk from here generally begins by heading upstream and following the river along. You will notice paths through the trees, these all lead to the same place which opens up to a wide swimming hole with a rope swing.

While in the area it is worth checking out some of the other great locations In the dorrigo national park of the north coast

Hello just wondering if you need to book to visit this place to stay overnight

I don’t believe there are campgrounds here.

The water quality of the Never Never River was atrocious last summer as the Bellingen Shire Council detected ecoli in the swimming hole and was forced to close off the river to public visitors. If sites like this are advertising on these website as swimming holes it would be great if visitors respected the area and didnt shit in the river.

No camping available here, only in nearby Belligen

  4. Melissa says:

Hello, Can you please advise if dogs are required to be on a leash?

Hi. I’m a local living in the Promised Land near this walk. Your directions for getting there are a bit wrong – and are actually sending visitors onto private land with cattle (and sometimes electric fences).
The correct directions to get you to the swimming hole you’re describing are ……

From Bellingen, cross the first bridge, take the next right and continue to the SECOND bridge. There’s a carpark on the left just over that bridge – then cross the road and follow the tracks upstream. That will take you to the wide swimming hole with a rope swing. This is a short walk through the bush. There is no camping available – and no toilets. The road from Bellingen is sealed – but pretty rough in places.
Hope this helps everyone find the right place ….. (maybe you could adjust your directions to help….)

  6. Maggie says:

Ooops – sorry – just to clarify my directions ……. the car park after the second bridge is on the right, not the left. And the bridge count doesn’t include the bridge in Bellingen itself. It’s the second bridge after you actually get into the Gleniffer valley.

    Hi
I was wondering whether you can take your dog with you or if it’s national park land?

  8. ALAN COPPARD says:

There is E coli in the river from the large number of people pooing close to the river. Also watch out for the Bullrout stone fish in the river.

  9. Ann says:

It’s state forest so you can take your dog.
